Am I Starting to Figure This Out?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved art. All kinds of art. I (obviously) love making art, but it took me a long time to figure out WHY I loved it. I think I’m finally starting to get there and FINALLY starting to get a handle on what type of art I like to make.

One of the things artists are told is that they need to have an artist statement.

Definition of an artist statement: An artist statement is piece of writing by you that helps the audience access or understand your artistic work.

I love this idea of a simple way to describe what we, as artists, do, but holy hell is it hard to SIMPLIFY what we do in a way that isn’t a novel or thesis statement.

BUT - after being absorbed in the art space so much recently, I am starting to develop a sense of what I like to do and why. Am I ready to write an artist statement? I don’t think so, but here’s what I know:

  • I love the play between colors, and how they interact with each other

  • Texture is my FAVE underneath all those layers

  • Using different tools to make different marks adds another layer of depth that is fun to play with

  • Seeing the process of a painting is far more interesting that the final product

I have SO MUCH TO PRACTICE to get closer to what I feel is my style and trust me when I tell you that this is the most fun I have ever had in my art life.

I think I’m starting to figure this out!
